Have you ever finished a video game (RPG) or a fantasy novel, watched the credits roll, and wondered, “I wonder what happened to the heroes after this?”
I’ve always been that type of person—the one who daydreams about whether the hero lived happily ever after or how they felt in a world that no longer needed their swords.
That’s why Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End resonated with me so deeply.
When I learned the story begins after the adventure has ended, I knew immediately
“This is the story I’ve been searching for.”
⏳ Tears Shed by an Elf Who Lives Through Eternity
The protagonist, Frieren, is an elven mage who has lived for over a thousand years.
To her, a decade spent traveling with her comrades was nothing more than a few days—or even a fleeting moment.
When the Hero Himmel eventually passed away from old age, she initially remained calm, almost as if it were someone else’s business.
However, at his funeral, when she witnessed the grief of the people and realized how little she had actually tried to “know” him, large tears began to fall from her eyes.
Reading that scene, I reflected on my own life and felt a tightening in my chest Because the story is told through the eyes of an immortal elf, the brevity of a human life and the preciousness of “the present moment” resonate with us in a deeply profound way.
🍩 Loveable “Munching Moments” Amidst the Journey
While the story deals with deep themes, it’s not always heavy.
In fact, I believe the greatest charm of this work lies in the ordinary, everyday interactions.
I especially love the apprentice Fern’s obsession with food 🍩
Watching her hold a large donut with both hands and happily munch away is so healing.
Then there’s the recurring gag where Frieren gets half-eaten by a “Mimic” disguised as a treasure chest (lol).
Seeing a legendary mage over 1000 years old struggling inside a monster is hilarious and surreal.
These moments make their journey feel so much more personal and relatable.
📖 Discovering New Emotions with Every Page
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is currently published up to Volume 14.
The series is actually on a hiatus at the moment, but fans around the world, including myself, sincerely hope the creators take all the time they need to rest and recover.
There is no need to rush. We will be right here, eagerly and patiently waiting for the day we can join Frieren on her journey once again, whenever the creators feel ready and healthy!

Lastly, let’s look a bit into the history of Japanese subculture.
The image of the “noble, long-eared elf” is said to have been popularized in Japan by the character Deedlit from the 1980s masterpiece Record of Lodoss War.
To be honest, for me, the image of an “Elf” was always synonymous with Deedlit, but now Frieren has joined that special place in my heart.
Frieren carries on that beautiful and noble lineage, but by adding a “lazy and very human” essence to her character, we’ve come to feel even closer to her.
